In Mei 2024 het ek by die raad van die departement van Hoogeveen aangesluit en net ses maande later het ek die ongelooflike eer aangeneem om die Klimaatambassadeur van Hoogeveen te word. Hierdie rol is so uiteenlopend as wat dit inspirerend is, gedryf deur &#8216;n diep passie vir ons planeet en sy toekoms. Van die organisering van lewendige natuurgeleenthede en lewendige plantruilmarkte tot die aanbied van boeiende begeleide toere en natuurwandelings vir alle ouderdomme, wy ek myself daaraan toe om &#8216;n ware verbintenis tussen mense en die natuurlike w\u00eareld te bevorder. Daardie dag het my broer my heel eerste teelmannetjie vasgehou, &#8216;n nuuskierige klein krimpvarkie met die naam Archie (Dr. Archibald Hopper). Dit was toe dat ek hom &#8216;n belofte gemaak het: dat ek nooit sou ophou om met diere te werk nie, want dit is waar my hart werklik l\u00ea.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Op 14 Oktober 2014 is my broer ongelukkig onverwags oorlede. Om my belofte na te kom en sy nagedagtenis lewend te hou, het ek &#8216;n skildery van Archie deur die Britse kunstenaar Danielle Tomlinson laat skilder. Met haar vriendelike toestemming het ek die portret op my bobeen laat tatoe\u00eber. &#8216;n Permanente en diep persoonlike herinnering aan daardie dag, daardie belofte en die pad wat ek belowe het om te volg.   <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-white-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hedgehog Program: Van &#8216;n enkele troeteldier tot &#8216;n globale platform<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dit het alles in 2011 begin toe ek my eerste Afrika-dwergkrimpvarkie Bella aangeneem het. &#8216;n Klein reddingsdiertjie wat ek op &#8216;n Nederlandse markplekwebwerf gevind het. Destyds was betroubare inligting oor die aanhou van hierdie diere as troeteldiere byna onmoontlik om in Nederlands te vind. Dus het ek my tot Engelse, Duitse en uiteindelik selfs Spaanse bronne gewend om saam te stel wat ek moes weet.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soos ek meer geleer het, het ek besef ek was nie die enigste een wat sukkel nie. Om ander in dieselfde situasie te help, het ek &#8216;n klein aanlyn forum begin: Witbuikegel Forum. Dit het amper oornag vlam gevat. Binne net &#8216;n paar maande het meer as 200 Nederlandse krimpvarkie-eienaars aangesluit, kennis, ervarings en vrae gedeel. Die gemeenskap het vinnig gegroei en so ook die vraag na duidelike, toeganklike inligting.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014 het ek my eerste werpsel baba-krimpvarkies verwelkom, insluitend een onvergeetlike klein mannetjie met die naam Archie. Dit was die begin van my tyd as teler. &#8216;n Hoofstuk wat parallel geloop het met die steeds groeiende behoefte aan struktuur en deursigtigheid in die krimpvarkiew\u00eareld. Ek het begin met die ontwikkeling van &#8216;n stamboomprogram en &#8216;n omvattende sorgwebwerf: De Witbuikegel Wiki. &#8216;n Webwerf met betroubare, wetenskaplik gebaseerde inligting oor krimpvarkiegesondheid en -welsyn.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oor die jare was die formule suksesvol. My teelpogings het erkenning gekry, en so ook die webwerf. Gou het ek boodskappe ontvang van krimpvarkie-entoesiaste regoor Europa en selfs verder weg. Almal op soek na betroubare, veeltalige hulpbronne. Uit daardie internasionale belangstelling is The Hedgehog Program gebore.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Op 14 Oktober 2019, presies vyf jaar na die dood van my broer, het ek The Hedgehog Program amptelik as &#8216;n besigheid geregistreer. Wat as &#8216;n persoonlike projek begin het, het iets veel groter geword: &#8216;n missie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toe die Nederlandse regering die Positiewe lijst ingestel het, wat krimpvarkies as troeteldiere verbied het, het ek die moeilike besluit geneem om op te hou met teel. Maar vir The Hedgehog Program was dit nie die einde nie. Dit was &#8216;n nuwe begin.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vandag is The Hedgehog Program &#8216;n florerende internasionale platform vir onderwys en navorsing oor krimpvarkies, tenrecs en gimnure. Met ge\u00efntegreerde vertaaltegnologie is ons inhoud nou beskikbaar in byna elke taal regoor die w\u00eareld.
