Citizen science

Introduction

At The Hedgehog Program, we believe that everyone can play a part in protecting hedgehogs. Our citizen science initiatives give you the opportunity to contribute directly to research and conservation, no matter your level of experience.

By taking part, you help us collect valuable data that can reveal population trends, identify threats, and improve habitats. Whether ou’re in your garden, walking in the countryside, or working in the field, your contribution makes a difference.

    How participation works

Participation in our citizen science projects is designed to be accessible and straightforward, but the method depends on the project. For some initiatives, you can reord your sightings using Observation.org or the ObsIdentify app, which allow you to submit photos and details of your encounters. For other projects, you might help by sending us physical samples of hedgehog hairs and/or quills, which we analyse to study their microscopic structure. Each project comes with clear instructions, so you’ll always know exactly how to contribute and what information is most valuable.

    Results & impact

Citizen sience is more than just collecting data, it’s about turning observations into meaningful action. The results from our initiatives helps us map hedgehog populations, monitor seasonal behaviors, and detect changes in their environment. This information is shared with conservation groups, researchers, and policymakers to guide decisionsthat can have a real, lasting impact on hedgehog survival. Every entry you submit adds a vital piece to the bigger picture.
